Jim Corbett National Park

The majestic Jim Corbett
National Park is set in the picturesque Himalayan Valley in the state of Uttaranchal.
Named after the famous widlife attractions at corbett conservationist Jim Corbett,
the park is famous for its population of tigers, leapords and elephants. Since
it was established in 1936 as the Haley National Park (first national park in
India), Corbett has been home to an amazing variety of flora and fauna. A part
of the Project Tiger, the park houses one of the largest populations of the
wild beast found in any Indian wildlife park. The varied topography of the region
comprising of hills, rivers, pleatues and ravines, give the Corbett National
Park a wide variety of flora and fauna that include about 110 tree species,
50 mammal species, 580 bird species and 25 species of reptiles. The park is
open from November 15 to June 15 and other times it remains closed due to monsoons.

The perfect environs of the park make it a perfect haven for the tiger and other
animals that include different species of deer and wild boar. Other wild animals
found in the region include leapords, jungle cat, fishing cat, sloth bear, Wildlife

The smaller inhabitants of the jungle include Himalayan palm civet, Indian gray
mongoose, common otter, blacknaped hare and porcupine. Elephants are another
major attraction at the Corbett National Park. Along the rivers, one can see
the long snouted, fish eating gharial and the mugger crocodile. The Sal trees
found in plenty across the park, provide an ideal habitat for the Langur and
the Rheusus monkeys.
Other Attractions
» Ramnagar : Ramnagar, situated on the outskirts of the park,
is a busy little market town. The town which can be used as a base camp for
exploring the park also makes a fishing base camp from where most resorts arrange
fishing trips.
» Jeep Safari Tours : Jeep Safari Tours and Jeef Safaris are
one of the major attractions of Corbett, is a convenient way to travel around
the park. The jeep safari tours which provide the visitors a chance to spot
wild animals in their natural habitat, are available on hire at the gates of
the park. It is advisable to carry a pair of binoculars if you want to have
a closer look at the animals.
General Information/ Useful Tips
» Visitors should reach the gates of the park an hour before the gates open
for completing necessary formalities.
» All tourists visiting the park are required to obtain permits for entry into
the park, from the park administration centre at Ramnagar.
» A number of lodges are available around the park which provide good accommodation
facilities at reasonable prices. Tourist guides can also be arranged here.
Getting There
» By Air : The Phoolbagh Airport at Pantnagar, 50 km from Corbett,
is the nearest airport. Local transport is available here to take you to the
park. The nearest international airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport
at Delhi (300 km).
» By Rail : The railway station at Ramnagar can be used to access
the Corbett National Park. From here one can travel to the park by road.
» By Road : The best way to travel to Corbett is to take your
own vehicle, preferably a jeep. It will help you to reach the park as well as
explore the insides and the surroundings of the park. Delhi is about 300 km
from Corbett.
