Agra - Tajmahal Trip
Since 1650, when its construction was completed, the Taj Mahal has
fascinated travellers, poets and painters alike who have tried to describe
the charm of this bewitching monument in one way or the other. The Taj
Mahal is situated in the city of Agra in the northern Indian state of
Uttar Pradesh on the banks of river Yamuna. It was built by Mughal emperor
Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Arjumand Banu Begum,
popularly known as Mumtaz Mahal, the 'Chosen of the Palace'.
History
Arjumand Banu Begum married the third son of Jehangir, prince Khurram who
loved her more than anything else in the world. In 1628, Khurram became
king after a merciless battle and took the name of Shahjahan. In1631,
accompanying her husband on a military expedition to the south, Mumtaz
Mahal died while giving birth to their 14th child. It is said that the
emperor was crushed because of her death and their was mourning in the
palace for two years. Shah Jahan now decided to erect the most beautiful
mausoleum in the world for his wife, which was her last wish. The
construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1633 on the banks of river Yamuna
where 20,000 workers labored for 17 years to complete the incredible
monument. Stone carvers, inlay craftsmen and workers were summoned from
distant places such as Persia, Turkey and Baghdad.
